Components of a Multitiered System of Supports and the Role of a Student Success Team: How Do Both Plans Impact Teaching and Learning?
Tuesday July 23, 2024 9:00am - 12:00pm EDT
A multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) is a proactive and preventative framework that integrates data and instruction to maximize student achievement and support students social, emotional, and behavior needs from a strengths-based perspective. MTSS offers a framework for educators to engage in data-based decision making related to program improvement, high-quality instruction and intervention, social and emotional learning, and positive behavioral supports necessary to ensure positive outcomes for districts, schools, teachers, and students.

For the MTSS framework to be implemented successfully, school leaders must lead, communicate, and participate in many (if not all) areas of implementation. School leaders must also understand the importance of student-level work, systems-level problem solving, and assist in building a mindset that every student is the responsibility of every teacher and helping staff take ownership of the continuous improvement process (Marlowe, 2021).

Doing Discipline Differently: How to Respond to Student Misbehavior and the Whys Percolating at or Below the Surface
Tuesday July 23, 2024 9:00am - 12:00pm EDT
Schools are seeing an increased number of students of all ages and stages "misbehaving" and "acting badly." This interferes with learning, classroom management and psychosocial development on virtually a daily basis. It adds significantly to educators’ stress. This workshop is designed first to help school counselors and other educators understand the whys:

Why are students acting out or self-isolating? To this end, we will focus on this phrase: "Behavior is the language of trauma."

Second, we will focus on how to address the negative student behaviors now being seen in many classrooms, which can be recharacterized as cries for help. In the process, we are challenging the existing assumptions in many settings that punishment (isolation, suspension, and expulsion) is effective and offer up, in their stead, different approaches that focus on understanding, compassion and restorative practices.

Creating a Positive School Climate & Culture from the Inside Out
Wednesday July 24, 2024 11:00am - 11:50am EDT
In this lively and collaborative workshop, principals will learn how to reflect on the current state of their school's culture, gather feedback, and put concrete, data-driven ideas in place to improve the culture and climate of their school.

A potential program description is below:

Does your school have a clear direction? Are staff/students aware of, aligned with and
actively embracing your school's Mission, Vision and Values? Do parents/caregivers know where you're heading and supporting you to get there? If the answer is no, it's time to examine your culture, define aspirations, involve stakeholders, design and deliver the inclusive climate and culture your school community desires! Reduce teacher burnout, increase morale, and ensure high engagement amongst staff, students and families/caregivers. In this collaborative workshop, you'll learn how to take stock of your school, focus on feedback, and get it moving in a positive direction.

From Passing the Mic to Dropping It
Wednesday July 24, 2024 11:00am - 11:50am EDT
When we create spaces for students and colleagues to grab the mic they might just create mic drop moments and knock it out of the park.  We all know when students and colleagues have the opportunity to share, lead, and offer their contributions, it changes the energy in the room. This session will focus on that energy.  Come learn how launching and organizing unique assemblies centered on staff and student stories has increased empathy, connection, and humanity within a school culture.  With themes around showing up for each other and sharing who we are beyond the surface, you will witness the courage that illuminates from the stage to the audience within seconds.  Through videos, testimonials, and "meeting" a few students and educators virtually, you will walk away inspired to take a chance in empowering members of your school community to create their own mic drop moments to positively impact your school.

Redefining Success through the Vision of a Graduate
Wednesday July 24, 2024 11:00am - 11:50am EDT
In schools and districts across Massachusetts and throughout the country, the idea of a vision of a graduate (VoG), is becoming a new and important way to measure and celebrate student progress.  Schools and districts with a VoG are focused on preparing graduates for a future that will require them to have not only content knowledge and understandings but also transferable skills and dispositions that will allow them to be flexible and adaptable in the rapidly changing world. The VoG encourages schools and districts to shift what is central to education as we know it and re-design systems to highlight the strengths and abilities of all learners.  It can be a powerful force to dismantle inequities. Join NEASC staff to discuss the creation and implementation of a school or district VoG.  You will come away with ideas and resources (including the newly released NEASC VoG Handbook) that will help you move this work forward in your school or district.

Reaching Across the Divide: Exemplary White Teachers in Racially Diverse Classrooms
Wednesday July 24, 2024 1:40pm - 2:30pm EDT
In Massachusetts: 87 percent of teachers are white, while 47 percent of students are of color - a clear mismatch. Studies have shown that strong positive relationships are essential for learning, but often, the relationships between white teachers and students of color are strained at best, leading to poorer learning outcomes. Clearly, Job #1 is to diversify the teacher workforce, but research suggests that parity may not be reached for several decades. Educational leaders and policymakers must recognize and remedy the harm that many white teachers inadvertently cause. One lens for understanding this critical issue is to look at white teachers who have successfully crossed the racial/cultural divide. This interactive presentation will share the findings of a recent study of 19 white middle and high school teachers in Massachusetts who were deemed exemplary by educators and parents of color.  We will discuss some of the changes that are needed to close the divide.

Wednesday July 24, 2024 2:40pm - 3:30pm EDT
This presentation is for building leaders, Athletic Directors, and educators who want to give their student athletes, primarily team captains, the training and support they need to be successful. Too often, captains are selected based on arbitrary measures including popularity, athleticism (best player), parental pressure, and other factors that do not necessarily equip these student athletes with the tools they need to succeed. Whether we get the sections right or not...they all need our support. 'Captain's Practice' is designed for those who have been tasked with the awesome responsibility of leading their peers, in and out of the classroom, on the field, court, rink, etc. Students with leadership potential (future captains) will also benefit from participating in this interactive leadership training. Join us to learn about the program and how you can bring Captain's Practice to your school!

Did Someone Call 9-1-1? Crisis Management
Wednesday July 24, 2024 2:40pm - 3:30pm EDT
When you were preparing to be an administrator, did you realize that a large part of the job was crisis management? Maintaining safety, navigating social media, communicating with students, faculty and families, and providing the best resolution possible often happens simultaneously. All of this requires having systems in place ahead of time to manage these ever changing dynamics. Whether it is an incident of discrimination, a medical emergency, a safety threat, or a plumbing issue that might result in a dismissal, administrators are charged with deciding how to proceed in incredibly challenging situations.

Come hear how schools can work collaboratively as an administrative team and with community partners; including first responders as well as public and mental health entities, to ensure that when a school-based emergency occurs, school personnel are equipped to respond immediately to reduce the impact. Concrete examples, clear takeaways, and helpful language provided.

Math Challenges: How One Administrator Made Math Exciting and Engaging for the Entire School
Wednesday July 24, 2024 2:40pm - 3:30pm EDT
How often have you heard students say they aren't a math person? Or how about teachers saying kids don't have the grit to stick with tough problems? In this session we will explore a way administrators can prove both statements wrong through dynamic and thought-provoking math activities tailored to engage students effectively. Using monthly "Math challenges" administrators can foster deep mathematical understanding and critical thinking skills among students in a way that kids think is fun. This session will look at how to engage your whole school, all grades, in a monthly contest which kids will want to take part in. We will examine how to make math physical, visual, interesting, stimulating, and most importantly, accessible.   By the conclusion of the session, administrators have a series of activities that will cultivate a math-rich environment that inspires curiosity and enthusiasm for mathematical exploration among students.

SEL in the classroom - Persevering through challenge: Helping students develop coping and perseverance skills in the face of challenges
Wednesday July 24, 2024 2:40pm - 3:30pm EDT
Adolescence can be hard. School can be hard. Life can be hard. And that was true even before the many challenges we have all faced in the last three years. The Parker faculty has been working on deliberate, research-driven strategies that support students in persevering in the face of challenge and the discomfort it brings. This workshop will focus on how teachers develop and leverage relationships with students to support the development of coping and perseverance skills. We will showcase how SEL principles inform system, classroom, and student work. Participants will leave with strategies to employ in their classroom when students are dysregulated and struggling.

Teaching the Leaders of Tomorrow
Wednesday July 24, 2024 2:40pm - 3:30pm EDT
Anyone working in education today knows that school behavior is a major concern.  One solution is to provide broader leadership opportunities for students.  There are many ways to do this from the whole school level to the classroom level.  This presentation will dig into some exciting ways to offer leadership opportunities at the various levels. When students have an opportunity to lead, they feel a strong sense of ownership over their learning and feel a deep sense of connection to the school environment.  This strengthens school culture and reduces behavior issues. Research also shows that students are more likely to take feedback from a peer rather than an adult.  This is another huge benefit to having students take on leadership roles. Let's be sure we are providing ample leadership opportunities in order to teach the leaders of tomorrow!

A Standards-based Approach for Assessing the Quality of Athletic Programs
Thursday July 25, 2024 10:50am - 11:40am EDT
Educationally based school athletic programs play a valuable role in preparing young people for the world. These programs help students develop social and emotional skills including team-work, dedication, goal orientation, and resilience; just to name a few. Increasingly, however, school athletic programs are facing challenges. These challenges include poor sportsmanship, hazing, and a win-first perspective not compatible with educationally based programs. Join our panel that will include Bob Baldwin, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, John Cabral, superintendent of the Taunton Public Schools, and George Edwards, Chief Accreditation Officer at NEASC as they discuss how Standards can be used to support school leaderships in developing and maintaining quality school athletic programs.

2.Class cup challenge (points for classes going to events)
3.Sailor of the Month Awards (teacher nominate)
4.Splash events on half a day (fun events)
5.Blue Cards for high honors, honor roll, and perfect attendance (give students a prize)
6.Wall of Excellence (students write their names on a block of a wall sharing their accomplishments)

Putting the SEL in CASEL - A journey through effective implementation of targeted TIer 1,2 & 3 advisory across two school communities
Thursday July 25, 2024 10:50am - 11:40am EDT
Over the course of the past few years, the Stoughton Public Schools has made a committment to improving SEL practices in our buildings to truly meet the needs of students. One Principal worked to establish a Tier 1 advisory opportunity for all students focused on relationship building while the other established an intricate mentoring program that met students needs on a Tier 2 and/or Tier 3 basis. While still not enough, these SEL shifts bring CASEL to life in the elementary setting alongside staff SEL development, ongoing feedback and observation to increase student relationships and make sure all students have someone they can go to when they need the most support.

Bystander Intervention Training (Students & Adults)
Thursday July 25, 2024 1:30pm - 2:20pm EDT
This anti-harassment bystander intervention workshop focuses on providing participants with the "5Ds" (direct, delay, delegate, document, distract) as strategies to disrupt an incident of harassment in addition to examining the ways that power dynamics related to a victim's visible identities come into play during incidents of harassment. The workshops starts by defining the history of bystander intervention, why it's important, and the negative mental, physical, and collective effects of harassment as a public health concern. It then uses a video of a real life harassment incident as an example, covers the five strategies, and provides opportunities for participants to think through how to apply the five strategies if they were in the situation that the video portrays. Most importantly, the workshop ends with four scenarios that take place in a school setting based off of real life incidents that the student presenters have witnessed or experienced and facilitates a discussion of how

Distributed Leadership and Creating a positive Culture and Climate
Thursday July 25, 2024 2:30pm - 3:20pm EDT
We have been successful in applying for a Barr foundation grant and it has helped us to redesign what teaching and learning means at our school.
Specifically, I can talk through the process of using distributed leadership as a way to help create and foster a positive culture and climate for students and staff alike. Specifically, I can talk through the structures used to create and use a daily advisory class for SEL. I can also talk through how this structure has helped students and teachers with a shift towards competency based education and has set us up for student-led-conferences as a way for students to take more ownership of their learning.
Additionally, I can talk through how we have built this as a way to create cohesion and deeper rigor in the classroom and how the ILT and other teachers are empowered to help with this.

Leadership development needs to be a priority and included in the curriculum for all students.

Learn how Canton High School made this a reality including action steps taken to create the course and curriculum, and how we achieved making formal leadership development part of our graduation requirements.

We will share the adjustments made to our Wellness model and master schedule, as well as how the course supports and fosters co- and extra-curricular leadership opportunities including mentoring, community service, and involvement in state and regional initiatives.

* This session is open to all levels but will be presented through a secondary perspective.
